Description

Created for Space Shirts, this illustration features two communicating aliens designed to mark the 25th anniversary of Professor Scott E. Fahlman’s original emoticon — the precursor to today’s emoji. Originating in Carnegie Mellon University’s Computer Science Department, early emoticons were ASCII-based combinations of characters typed on QWERTY keyboards, offering a playful way to convey emotion in early digital communication. From left to right, the expressions shown are a winking smile, a laughing smile, and a kiss.
